MULTISPECIES JUNIOR DERBY SET FOR NOV. 27-28

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys -- The Islamorada Fishing Club's Junior Derby, set for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27-28, encourages kids to get out and fish for nearly 50 species of fish including amberjack, barracuda, cobia, dolphin, hogfish and even lizard fish.

The 2009 IFC Junior Derby events take place at the Islamorada Fishing Club, mile marker 82 bayside in Islamorada.

Putting the focus on fun and sportsmanship, the derby is an all-release tournament. The IFC not only teaches the importance of fish conservation through catch-and-release, but also a sportsman-like ethic to the young anglers. All scoring is based on the honor system.

Grand champion anglers are to be named in three age divisions -- super small fry (up to age 6), small fry (ages 7-10) and junior (ages 11-16). Separate grand champions are to be named in guided and unguided divisions within each age group, and many other prizes also await top anglers.

Entrants are allowed to fish from a boat or from land, so kids can try their luck from any of the Keys' popular fishing bridges or shorelines.

Points are to be awarded for both inshore and offshore species of fish, as well as flats and fly favorites: bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and redfish. Anglers can enter up to three of a species for points.

Any tackle except power reels can be used. Double points are awarded for fish caught on fly tackle.

A kick-off party and rules meeting is set for 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at the IFC. Fishing is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28. A banquet and awards presentation is to start at 6 p.m. at the IFC.

Entry fee is $50 per angler, including the social ticket and ditty bag. Additional social tickets are available for $30 each.

It's amazing to me how the world resents the United States and quietly applauds it's political and social setbacks, yet expects us to be the planet's caretaker.  You can't have it both ways, dudes.  Any time there is a disaster or a glitch in the global karmic stream, who's first to offer help and "rally the troops" to alleviate the crisis?  Us?  Even in a severe economic rut the good old US of A is always there.  So, bite me, Nimrods...

NEW FLORIDA KEYS NEWS

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Outdoor athletes and thrill seekers have an opportunity to explore Islamorada by land, bike and water in the Amazing Race of Islamorada scheduled
Saturday, Nov. 21.

The competitive event is set to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, from Robbie’s Marina, 77520 Overseas Highway
(mile marker 77.5), in Islamorada. Registration starts at 9 a.m.
that morning.

The race starts at Robbie's with a three-mile round-trip run. The second part of the relay will require team members to carry their kayak from a staging area at Robbie’s to the water and launch. They will paddle to Indian Key’s beach area, where a team member will run to the lookout tower and have a passport stamped before returning to the kayak and paddling back to Robbie's Marina.

The team will then carry the kayak back to the staging area for the race’s final event: bicycling a six-mile round-trip course that ends at Robbie’s.

Amazing Race teams must either consist of three people (one person per category) or one person who will participate in all three categories. The race divisions include open, women and high school students ages 16 and above. Winners will be based on their overall time and an award will be given for best uniform.

The entry fee is $85 per team, which includes a gift bag and lunch for each participating member. All teams must provide their own bikes and kayaks. Kayaks can be rented from Robbie's Marina at (305) 664-4878 or Back Country Cowboy at (305) 517-4177.

The event is sponsored by Robbie's Marina and the Islamorada Wrestling Club. A portion of event proceeds is to benefit local wrestling and mentoring programs for teens.
